Applications Committee

The purpose of the committee is to assure a forum is provided for those individuals in the field of Experimental Mechanics doing the work on a more practical level than pure research.  These are individuals who need as well as provide answers and techniques that are basic and not once removed from the problem solution.

Applications Committee: Updated May 2012

The purpose of the Applications Committee is to provide a forum for individuals in the field of Experimental Mechanics who are working on a more practical level than pure research. Recent committee activities have been to seek to develop IMAC and SEM Annual pre-conference courses for experimental mechanics practitioners, to set up student-employer activities and to developed applications-based conference sessions with equipment vendors. The committee welcomes participation from anyone who is interested in the more practical aspects of experimental mechanics and dynamics, including but not limited to experimentally-based researchers, commercial practitioners and equipment vendors.

Applications Committee Meeting 15 June 2011

Items discussed:

Pre-conference course

The committee previously considered pre-conference courses on "Basic Dynamic Testing and Strain Gauge Data Analysis” and on “Linking Test and Analysis”.  Proposed to expand to include measurement uncertainty, including dynamic systems.  Discussion with the Dynamic Behaviour of Materials TD would be initiated to consider development of this.

Student-employer reception
We continue to consider an evening reception during which potential employers could meet students looking for jobs. The participants could include those looking for post-doctoral positions and those looking for positions in Government.
The event could be preceded by a short panel discussion covering skills potential employers would like to see and technical topics they would like to see people work on.  There is interest within the Education Committee to develop such an event.

Technology applications sessions
Sessions to give vendors an opportunity to demonstrate the abilities of their products.
Applications committee meeting at the next IMAC.  This was initiated.

Applications Committee Meeting 30 January 2012-04-30

Items discussed:
Generality of IMAC tutorial sessions
We need to consider whether these sessions meet the needs of all IMAC attendees. Are the sessions too general or too specific?
Perhaps there is a requirement for tutorial sessions more oriented to practical industrial problems. Consider for the next IMAC.
Proposed session “So you think you know dynamics?”
Attempt to put structural dynamics in context of other related fields of science and engineering.
Give examples of industrial impact.
Application of theory from other fields, such as communications technology.
Paul Reynolds and Thomas Lagö will consider organising a tutorial session along these lines for the next IMAC.
