Applied Photoelasticity - Updated May 2010

Applied Photoelasticity Survey 2010

Applied Photoelasticity has constituted one of the foundational technologies in the history of the SEM. The interests and remit of the SEM has widened and deepened with the passage of time and the advances in Experimental Mechanics research. It is therefore appropriate at this time to review the current status and activity within the membership who have indicated an interest in Applied Photoelasticity. This survey conducted on behalf of the Applied Photoelasticity Technical Sub-Division is now complete and the results of the questionnaires are reviewed here.

The review has indicated a general reduction in the activity within the subject, however, there are encouraging concentrations of activity which are reflected in the report.

The review indicates the main areas of active research and application are:-

  • Solid modelling utilizing the Scattered Light technique.
  • A novel technique based on Luminescent Photoelastic Coating.
  • Some development of Grey Field techniques and Fracture Mechanics analysis.

The review also highlighted a number of potential candidates for Honors awards including Zandman.
