Dynamic Behavior of Materials - Updated May 2011

The purpose of this Technical Division is to provide a forum for the exchange of information on dynamic behavior of materials, plan and coordinate dynamic materials research of the society, and promote and/or organize special sessions, symposia, short courses, workshops, or manuals.

Activities for the past year include:

  • The technical division sponsored a technical track, “Dynamic Behavior of Materials” for the upcoming 2011 annual SEM Conference.  This includes:
    • Keynote Presentation by Prof. Veli-Tapani Kuokkala on Temperature Control and Strain-rate Change Techniques in Kolsky Bar Testing.
    • 24 Technical Sessions addressing the following topics

                                                    (i)           Dynamic Behavior of Composite Materials (4 sessions, Joint with Composites TD)

(ii)           Dynamic Failure and Fracture (1 session)

                            (iii)          Materials Response (4 sessions)

(iv)          Novel Testing of Materials (2 sessions)

                            (v)          Low Impedance Materials: Gels (2 sessions)

                            (vi)          Geo-materials (1 session)

(vii)         Dynamic Response of Concretes (1 session)

(viii)        Dynamic Response of Transparent Materials (2 sessions)

(ix)          Shock and Blast Loading (2 sessions)

                            (x)          Imaging at High Strain Rate (3 sessions)

(xi)          Simulation & Modeling of Dynamic Response & Failure (2 sessions)

  • The TD along with the optical methods division organized a panel on Imaging at High Strain Rate. This panel consists of both academic and industrial representatives and addresses the state of the art and challenges of imaging techniques employed in high strain rate testing.
  • The TD will provide a Best Paper award for 2011 conference papers, based on both oral and written papers.  The TD Executive committee will select the winning paper following the conference based on input from the Session Organizers and Session Chairs.
  • Plans for Dynamic Behavior sessions at the 2012 annual conference will be discussed at the upcoming TD meeting in Mohegan Sun, Connecticut.
  • The TD is currently working on a special issue of selected papers presented at the 2010 SEM conference for Experimental Mechanics Journal.
