Model Validation & Uncertainty Quantification

The purpose of the Technical Division on Model Validation and Uncertainty Quantification (MV&UQ) shall be to provide maximum technical benefits to its members by:

  • Promoting the advancement and understanding of MV&UQ theory and methods by providing a forum for the exchange of information on MV&UQ theory, methods, applications, and related activities.
  • Promoting “best practices” in the areas of experimental testing and validated simulations through the use of MV&UQ methods.
  • Providing educational opportunities to promote the understanding and use of proven MV&UQ methods.
  • Whenever possible, promoting the exchange of information and coordinating MV&UQ related activities with other technical or professional societies.

Model Validation and Uncertainty Quantification Division - Updated April 2009

The model validation and uncertainty quantification technical division (TD) has endured for five years in 2009. This year we had elections with our founding chair François Hemez stepping down. The TD elected Todd Simmermacher as the new chair. Also, our long time secretary, Ramesh Rebba, also stepped down, with Sezer Atamturktur enthusiastically voted into the position. Hopefully, the new officers can maintain the momentum imparted on the TD.

IMAC XXVII was a special on for the TD as the technical theme of the conference was Model Verification and Validation.  The TD arranged two keynote speakers for the conference as well as the luncheon speaker. Dr. Dimitri F. Kusnezov and Dr. John A. Cafeo presented excellent overviews of two different perspectives of model validation and verification. Dr. Thomas Carne presented many interesting and entertaining examples of validation and uncertainty quantification in practice. The MVUQ TD also organized nine sessions including tutorials on validation, verification, and uncertainty quantification. The tutorials included one session that carried an example problem throughout the session with different aspects of MVUQ being applied to it. There were also tutorials on model updating, and statistics in model validation. The presentations for these tutorials are available on this website. The sessions were very well attended. Last year (2008), the MVUQ TD introduced the “Best Model Validation Paper” that is sponsored by Los Alamos Dynamics which includes a plaque and a $400 dollar cash award. The paper goes to the best paper in the MVUQ organized sessions and is chosen by the session chairs. The 2008 winner was “Uncertainty Propagation in Experimental Dynamic Substructuring,” by D. de Klerk and S. N. Voormeeren of Delft University of Technology/BMW AG. Congratulations to our winners! The pre-conference short course “Verification and Validation of Computational Models” was once again taught by John Cafeo, François Hemez, Randy Mayes, Ramesh Rebba, and Todd Simmermacher. The course had 16 attendees. The TD is considering presenting this course at the SEM Annual meeting.

The MVUQ TD is continuing to grow. We are looking into developing more pre conference short courses, increasing our presence at the SEM Annual Meeting, as well as the continued development of sessions for IMAC XXVIII whose theme is renewable energy.
